Remembering the 1966 U16 Success

They say a week is a long time in politics and certainly fifty years is a long time in GAA land and on Saturday evening next Cloone GAA honour the Golden jubilee of the successful under 16 team that won the Leitrim Co Championship in 1966. With some of the team having won under sixteen honours with Aughavas in 1965 Cloone fielded it own team in1966 and went on to win the competition outright.

The team was managed by Michael Solan who introduced many new ideas and plenty of new training methods, training methods that were to become part and parcel of the modern training techniques many years later. This group of players were to become the nucleus of some the very successful teams which won the Leitrim Junior Championship in 1969 and the Leitrim Intermediate Championship in 1972.

On Saturday evening next the proceedings will start with mass for the late Liam McKeon at 8 pm. Liam was a member of the successful team and played at left half back in the final having played a blinder at full back in the semi final against Mohill in a game played in Pairc Shean O'Heslin Ballinamore. Following Mass there will a meet and greet in McKeon’s Bar where all members present will have the opportunity to meet and to share the many memories of that successful championship campaign. There will be momentums of the occasion presented to all team members with plenty of music and song to entertain all present.
